Council fined for emailing personal information to wrong recipients - 05 Oct 2011
In the news recently was the case of Surrey County Council who was fined £120,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office for breaching the Data Protection Act when they emailed personal information to the wrong recipients on three separate occasions.
The ICO said that as the information was not encrypted or password protected, it had the potential to be viewed by a significant number of unauthorised people.
There is no doubt that the growth in the use of email is inevitable not least because it is a quick, efficient and low cost means of keeping in touch with patents, colleagues and partners.
However, now is the time to ensure that you have an appropriate means by which you can encrypt the emails that contain sensitive information.
