The company

Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) is part of the Ascendant Group of companies and is Bermuda’s sole supplier of electricity, operating a generating plant and transmission & distribution system.  BELCO wanted to drive cost and efficiency savings through implementing an electronic payslips solution.

BELCO’s mission is to provide a secure, reliable and sustainable electric power system for the 65,000 people of Bermuda, including the Island’s vibrant tourism and financial services industries.

BELCO is committed to maintaining a high standard of environmental responsibility across all areas of the company. They set up an Environmental Management System to measure performance and ensure continuous improvement, including substantial reduction in paper use.

The Issues

BELCO was already using electronic solutions to reduce paper consumption in its offices and in customer billing, when it was decided that a major reduction could be achieved by sending electronic payslips.

This was a challenge as payroll was processed using SAP back-office software, including some bespoke elements; an off-the-shelf solution would simply not meet their needs. Some IT and payroll functions were outsourced to third parties and therefore, excellent project management was required.

BELCO was working to a tight timescale and needed to be able to deploy the solution in a matter of weeks in order to meet their environmental targets.

The Solution

SSLPost was selected from the SAP EcoHub and once assigned, rose to the challenge. The SSLPost Development Team wrote a bespoke electronic payslips solution that went into the SAP development system within one week. Working with Intelligroup; BELCO’s IT provider, ePayslips went into production within a few weeks, meeting BELCO’s tight timescales.

Each month the payroll is processed using the SAP System and the ePayslips are delivered automatically by email to employees. Each employee clicks the link on their monthly notification email, enters their unique password and opens a PDF document displaying their individual pay details.

Their private information remains confidential and the Payroll Department are able monitor activity via the in-built audit reporting that is standard within all SSLPost solutions.

The Outcome

BELCO was delighted to find a solutions provider that could respond quickly, deliver a custom electronic payslips solution within a tight timescale, provide great value for money and achieve a very fast return on their investment.

The solution is very easy to use and the BELCO Payroll Department seldom receive any queries regarding ePayslips. Employees benefit from a prompt, efficient and secure method by which to receive their pay documentation and have instant access to their pay history should they require it. The solution is helping managers to meet environmental targets whilst saving money, thanks to reduced stationery, printer consumables and postage costs.
